Quotes to Consider

Homer Hoeksema: “The punishment [of the stoning of the blasphemer] was severe; perhaps it may seem unnecessarily harsh. But we must remember that no profane person has a place in the midst of God’s people, and blaspheming God’s name was the clearest and most direct manifestation of profanity. Besides, death was the only way of cutting a man off from the fellowship of Israel. In principle this was no more terrible than excommunication from the church in the New Testament day. Severe this punishment was for him who received it; but it was also a severe visitation for the Israelitish mother and her father, who were reminded of their sin and stricken with misery and grief. A stern warning it was for the congregation, too” (Unfolding Covenant History, vol. 4, p. 91).
