Quotes to Consider:

John Calvin on I Cor. 7:37: "... this passage serves to establish the authority of parents, which ought to be held sacred ... in disposing of children in marriage, the authority of parents is of first-rate importance, provided they do not tyrannically abuse it ... the deliberations of parents ought to be regulated with a view to the advantage of their children. Let us bear in mind, therefore, that this limitation is the proper rule—that children allow themselves to be governed by their parents, and that they on the other hand, do not drag their children by force to what is against their inclination, and that they have no other object in view, in the exercise of their authority, than the advantage of their children."

Rev. C. Hanko on courtship: "Above all, you simply must agree on your doctrinal and spiritual convictions. Nothing cuts deeper than a spiritual breach between two persons. Nothing is worse than a realm of ‘I must not talk about that,’ especially when this deals with what is most precious to you: your faith. I do not say you must always agree on everything you talk about ... you must be of the same doctrinal and religious convictions. That is simply a must. If you contemplate being joined at some future date in the permanent bond of marriage, you must be of one heart and one mind when it comes to your spiritual life ... Never try to convince yourselves that time is bound to obliterate any religious differences between you ... If you agree doctrinally, and are both spiritually minded in your outlook on life, you already have a sound basis for a happy marriage" (Leaving Father and Mother, p. 12).
