Westminster Confession of Faith
Chapter X
Of Effectual Calling
I. All those whom God hath predestinated unto life,
and those only, He is pleased, in His appointed time, effectually to
call,[1]
by His Word and Spirit,[2] out of that
state of sin and death, in which they are by nature to grace and
salvation, by Jesus Christ;[3]
enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the
things of God,[4] taking away their
heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of flesh;[5]
renewing their wills, and, by His almighty power, determining them to
that which is good,[6] and effectually
drawing them to Jesus Christ:[7] yet
so, as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.[8]
II. This effectual call is of God's free and special
grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man,[9]
who is altogether passive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by
the Holy Spirit,[10] he is thereby
enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and
conveyed in it.[11]
III. Elect infants, dying in infancy, are
regenerated, and saved by Christ, through the Spirit,[12]
who works when, and where, and how He pleases:[13]
so also are all other elect persons who are incapable of being outwardly
called by the ministry of the Word.[14]
IV. Others, not elected, although they may be called
by the ministry of the Word,[15] and
may have some common operations of the Spirit,[16]
yet they never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be saved:[17]
much less can men, not professing the Christian religion, be saved in
any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives
according to the light of nature, and the laws of that religion they do
profess.[18] And to assert and
maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detested.[19]
[1] Romans 8:30: "Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also
called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he
justified, them he also glorified." Romans 11:7: "What then? Israel hath
not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained
it, and the rest were blinded." Ephesians 1:10-11: "That in the
dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all
things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even
in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being
predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things
after the counsel of his own will."
[2] II Thessalonians 2:13-14: "But we are bound to give thanks alway to
God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the
beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit
and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the
obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. II Corinthians 3:3:
"Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ
ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the
living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart."
II Corinthians 3:6: "Who also hath made us able ministers of the new
testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth,

made me free from the law of sin and death." Ephesians 2:1-5: "And you
hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time
past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the
children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in
times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the
flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he
loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together
with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)." II Timothy 1:9-10: "Who hath
saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our
works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in
Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the
appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and
hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel."

unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the
deep things of God." I Corinthians 2:12: "Now we have received, not the
spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know
the things that are freely given to us of God." Ephesians 1:17-18: "That

6:44-45: "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me

hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me."

cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." Romans 6:16-18: "Know ye not,
that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto
righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but
ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered
you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of
righteousness."

2:38-39: "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one

received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the
word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself,
but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth
because of the word, by and by he is offended." Hebrew 6:4-5: "For it is
impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the

doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of
Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you,
and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither
bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his
evil deeds." I Corinthians 16:22: "If any man love not the Lord Jesus

ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ
unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or
an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which
we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
