What Does God Think of the World?

Rev. Angus Stewart

The BBC 2 documentary, "What the World Thinks of God" (26 February, 2004), raises a number of very interesting questions. An even more important question is, What does GOD think of the world?

God declares, "There is none righteous, no, not one: there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one" (Rom. 3:10-12). Through the fall, "the whole world lieth in wickedness" (I John 5:19) and so "all the world" is "guilty before God" (Rom. 3:19).

Similarly, Christ witnesses against the world: "I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil" (John 7:7). "This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19).

Even "the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God" (I Cor. 3:19) for "the world by wisdom knew not God" (I Cor. 1:21). In the cross of Christ, God has "made foolish the wisdom of this world" (I Cor. 1:20) and judged the world (John 12:31).

What God says of the world in the Bible will be declared publicly and incontrovertibly on the judgment day. Then it will be known by all how important it is that we believe and think rightly of the true and living God revealed in His Son Jesus Christ in the sacred Scriptures.

God has thoughts of love and peace towards the world of His elect (Eph. 1:4) whom He reconciled through the cross of Jesus Christ (II Cor. 5:19). They overcome the wicked world by faith in Jesus, the Son of God (I John 5:4-5), and they will enter the new world, the new heavens and the new earth "wherein dwelleth righteousness" (II Peter 3:13).
